The Irish Midlands
The Irish Midlands (central counties pictured above in green) is home to beautiful rolling hills, historic sites, ancient castles, Moneygall (where President Obama has ancestral roots), and the River Shannon — Ireland's longest river.

Clonmacnoise
Founded in 548, Clonmacnoise was designated a National Monument in 1877.

It's well worth a visit to see the ancient monastic site, overlooking the beautiful River Shannon in County Offaly. Allow plenty of time to roam around its extensive ruins — a cathedral, castle, round tower, churches, high crosses, and a large collection of early Christian grave slabs.
