Old City of Jerusalem
— "Must-See" Attractions
The Old City of Jerusalem (surrounded by a wall and divided into four quarters: Jewish, Armenian, Christian and Muslim) is a "must-see" when
visiting Israel — it certainly was the highlight of my visit. Jerusalem (Israel's capital and largest city) plays an important role in Judaism, Christianity
and Islam. "Must-see" Jerusalem attractions include:
Jerusalem Hotel Reservations
Wailing Wall (Western Wall)
For a truly spiritual experience, be
sure to visit the Wailing Wall — the holiest of Jewish sites.
For centuries, it's been the gathering place for Jews from around
world who have come
to pray. Millions of prayers and messages, written
on tiny pieces of paper, are stuck in the cracks of the wall from
people of all religions who have visited there. Wonder if my note is still there after all these years? In keeping with
Orthodox Jewish tradition, men and women each have
own section. Be sure to dress appropriately.
Dome of the Rock
The Dome of the Rock
is located on the Temple
Mount in Jerusalem,
Wailing Wall (top right). Built between 688-91 AD, the Muslin shrine
is the oldest Islamic monument. Once made of gold, the dome is
now covered with gold leaf. The golden dome can be seen from
across the city.
Last Supper Room
Visit the The Last Supper Room — the 14th-century second-story
room where Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples. It is
the Tomb of David, a Jewish holy site on Mount Zion.
Via Dolorosa (Stations of the Cross)
Walk along the Via Dolorosa (Stations
Cross) — the
historic route is marked by 14 stations, starting at the
Lions' (St Stephens) Gate in the Muslim Quarter and ending at the
Church of the Holy Sepulchre
in the Christian Quarter.
Memorials & Museums
Jerusalem is home to many fine museums — Yad Vashem
Memorial and Holocaust Museum and The Israel Museum are not
to be missed!
Gan HaShlosha National Park — Sachne
Be sure to visit Sachne, located near Beit She'an in northern
Israel (between Jerusalem and Nazareth). Famous for
its hot springs and beautiful waterfalls, the National Park is
built on a
spring with naturally
heated water — it's no surprise that Sachne is a popular swimming destination
with the locals.
