World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off: Half Moon Bay, CA – Oct 10, 2011

Get ready to see some of the biggest pumpkins in California! Last year, Ron Root (of Citrus Heights, CA) took Top Prize. His winning Giant Pumpkin (pictured above) tipped the scales at an impressive 1,535 pounds – that’s a whole lot of pumpkin!

This year’s annual Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off takes place on Monday, October 10, 2011 from approximately 7am-11am at the I.D.E.S. Grounds on Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay.

The Pumpkin Weigh-Off is held every October (on Columbus Day – a federal holiday), usually the week before the annual world-famous Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival (which takes place prior to Halloween).

We usually drive to Half Moon Bay early in the morning (to beat the traffic) and enjoy coffee before heading over to the event. A few of our favorite coffee places are Moonside Bakery & Cafe (located on Main, just down the street from the weigh-in) and Half Moon Bay Coffee Company (corner of Stone Pine Rd and Main).

If you’re interested in seeing the giant pumpkins up close, the farmers’ trucks usually start lining the streets behind the I.D.E.S.Grounds early (between 7am-8am). It’s is a fun place to hang out and pumpkin-watch. You won’t believe the size of some of these pumpkins – whatever they’re feeding them, it seems to be working!

By about 9am, the farmers are out in full force. We like talking to them about their prized pumpkins and finding out their methods for getting them to grow so big. Everyone is friendly and open about their “pumpkin-growing secrets” – they’ll even pose for pictures before their giant pumpkins are fitted with special harnesses and loaded onto forklifts, prior to being weighed in.

By 10am, the front of the I.D.E.S. grounds (where the actual pumpkin weigh-in takes place) is packed with spectators waiting to see who will take the top prizes. The pumpkins (and the crowds) get bigger every year – the event draws hundreds of people, including the press, and usually features live entertainment. It’s a fun event for kids and big kids too – and don’t forget your pets! Many kids and pets even dress up in costume.

Official Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off gear (t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, etc.) are available for purchase at the site.

Good Luck to all the pumpkin growers who are participating in this year’s Half Moon Bay World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off. We’ll see you there!

Can you take a guess at how much this year’s winning pumpkin will weigh?
