Ano Nuevo State Reserve
It’s Mating & Birthing Season at Ano Nuevo State Reserve, the largest mainland breeding colony of Elephant Seals. What better time of year to take an Elephant Seal Guided Tour. Special Guided Walks are available now during “Breeding Season” (early December thru’ March, peaking by mid-February). It’s a fun place to visit – for kids and adults alike.
NOTE: Unlike San Francisco’s Pier 39 Sea Lions, these Elephant Seals can weigh between 3,000-5,000 pounds each. Don’t let their size fool you. Even though they are huge, they can move really fast, so be sure to keep your distance.
Año Nuevo State Reserve is located west of Highway 1, about 25 miles south of Half Moon Bay (between Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz) in Northern California. The Reserve is the largest mainland breeding colony of Elephant Seals and the only Natural Seal Habitat in North America. Today, over 3,000 Elephant Seals come here annually to “Birth,” “Breed” and “Molt.”
