The British Museum opened on January 15, 1759. It was the first national public museum in the world. Today, it’s one of London’s most popular museums, drawing over six million visitors a year. It’s one of the world’s largest and most interesting museums. And home to over eight million objects spanning the history of the world’s cultures, including the Egyptian Statue of Ramessess II and The Rosetta Stone. Sutton Hoo and Europe – Room 41

The popular 2021 Netflix movie “The Dig” depicts the historic Sutton Hoo excavation. It led to one of the most extraordinary discoveries in British archaeology. The Anglo-Saxon ship burial and its chamber was filled with hundreds of priceless treasures. It was discovered in 1939 beneath a large burial mound at Sutton Hoo, in Suffolk, UK. The finds were donated to the British Museum that year. Today, visitors from around the world come to admire the gallery’s stunning centerpiece.

The British Museum offers a range of free 90-minute Guided Gallery Tours and 45-minute Gallery Talks with guest speakers and curators, plus daily Audio Tours.

The Great Court Restaurant, located on the upper floor, has a spectacular glass-and-steel roof. Open daily for lunch, afternoon tea (and dinner on Fridays). The museum also features several cafes.
