Nestled along Northern California’s rugged coastline, Mendocino combines raw natural beauty with historic charm, making it an ideal romantic getaway. The laid-back atmosphere, reminiscent of the Caribbean or Mediterranean, is worlds away from Silicon Valley. With its stunning coastal views, cozy inns, fresh local cuisine, and serene redwood forests, Mendocino offers a peaceful escape. For wine lovers, nearby Anderson Valley provides a tranquil alternative to Napa or Sonoma, with award-winning wines in a scenic countryside setting.
Here are some of our tips and recommendation on Fun Things To Do and Where To Stay during a romantic 4-night getaway to Mendocino.
Day 1
Travel to Mendocino
Mendocino is about a 3.5-hour drive from San Francisco, taking you across the Golden Gate Bridge, up Hwy 101, through the scenic Anderson Valley Wine Country via Hwy 128. Admire the towering redwoods along the way before merging onto Hwy 1, where the windy road hugs the coastline, offering breathtaking ocean views as you head toward Mendocino.
Anderson Valley Wine-Tasting
Anderson Valley’s picturesque wine-growing region is famed for its rolling vineyards and exceptional wines, particularly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and aromatic varietals including Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. This charming valley offered the perfect retreat during our scenic drive to Mendocino, where we indulged in two afternoon wine-tastings. Watch the video below to take in the breathtaking views and experience the beauty of Anderson Valley’s vineyards.
Fathers + Daughters Cellars at Ferrington Vineyards
Our first stop was at Fathers + Daughters Cellars at Ferrington Vineyards, located in the heart of Anderson Valley, just north of Boonville, off Hwy 128. The family-run vineyard offers a truly unique wine-tasting experience. After a warm welcome, our tasting began on the cottage porch with a chilled bottle of Sarah’s Rustic Bubbles, paired with warm donut holes – a first for us, and both absolutely delightful! Next we enjoyed an exhilarating ride in a Kawasaki Mule up a scenic mountain, overlooking stunning views of the vineyards and surrounding valley.
Our friendly and knowledgeable hosts (Guy and Tom), led us through a sampling of a variety of handcrafted wines that makes Fathers + Daughters Cellars so special. From their bold Ella’s Reserve Pinot Noir to the refreshing Sauvignon Blanc, and The Dance, a blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewürztraminer – all a perfect blend of nature, wine, and connection. Our wine-tastings were paired with delicious small bites, all set in a picturesque, peaceful setting.
Tastings are limited to one per day, by reservation only. Book your tasting in advance to ensure you don’t miss out on this unforgettable wine experience – where every bottle tells a family story.
Lula Cellars
Our second tasting of the day was at Lula Cellars, a charming boutique winery nestled in the heart of Anderson Valley’s “Deep End,” just off Hwy 128. This hidden gem is renowned for its award-winning Pinot Noir wines. Enjoy your tasting in the pet-friendly outdoor area, overlooking Lula’s Estate vineyard. Hospitality Manager, Kim, ensures every visit is memorable, sharing Lula’s story and guiding you through each pour. Open daily from 11am-5pm, Lula Cellars offers a fun wine-tasting experience.
Continuing Our Drive
After our wine-tastings, we continued along scenic Hwy 128, heading toward the turnoff for Highway 1 and the stunning Mendocino coast. The drive winds through the towering redwoods, offering breathtaking views, but be ready for some sharp curves along the way.
Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa (BGI)
Perched on a hillside overlooking Smuggler’s Cove and the rugged Mendocino coastline, Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa offers a luxurious yet eco-friendly escape for those seeking tranquility and natural beauty. Only minutes away from downtown Mendocino, the intimate 10-room inn combines rustic charm with modern comforts. Whether you’re indulging in farm-to-table cuisine, relaxing by the four-sided glass and steel fireplace in the Great Room, or enjoying a rejuvenating spa treatment, Brewery Gulch Inn provides the perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence.
The Great Room offers a warm and inviting space perfect for dining, reading, or enjoying a game night with board games. And if you’re a movie buff, you’ll love the inn’s impressive collection of over 700 DVDs. Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, pastries, and fresh fruit available all day, along with breakfast and evening meals served in the spacious dining area or out on the scenic deck.
We stayed in the charming Manzanita Room, located on the first floor with its own private deck (see video below). French doors opened to lush landscaping and partial ocean views, setting a peaceful scene. The corner room, featuring a plush king bed, gas fireplace, and leather armchairs, was perfect for unwinding. Room amenities also included WiFi, a flat-screen TV with DVD and Direct TV. We loved the deep Japanese soaking tub, separate stall shower, and the soft, luxurious robes – always a nice touch when traveling. We felt so comfortable, it was hard to leave the room!
Wine Hour & Farm-To-Table Dining
The daily Wine Hour offered us the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind, and meet new friends. Since we had already spent the afternoon wine-tasting, we opted to skip the wine and enjoy our dinner. A true delight for food lovers, the inn’s farm-to-table menu showcases the best of the region, with dishes made from organically grown produce, free-range poultry, and freshly caught local fish.
Dinner is presented in a beautifully crafted redwood Mendo Box, each meal thoughtfully prepared to reflect the flavors of Mendocino’s bounty. Our first night, we enjoyed Queso Birria-Style Tacos with braised and shredded chipotle pork, house-fried tortilla chips with guacamole, and cilantro-lime slaw. Dessert was a decadent Vanilla-Mango Panna Cotta, topped with a sprinkle of Tajín and freshly whipped cream – a perfect end to the meal.
As the day winded down, the inn’s spacious outdoor deck provided a perfect perch to enjoy the coastal scenery and watch the sunset through the trees, surrounded by nature’s beauty. This serene setting made it easy to lose track of time – one of those moments you wish could last forever.
Day 2
Breakfast at Brewery Gulch Inn
We kicked off our morning with a beautifully prepared, cooked-to-order breakfast. The spread included coffee, hot chocolate, and fresh-squeezed juices to accompany the main courses. I opted for The Classic—two farm-fresh eggs served with toast, Brewery Gulch Inn’s signature chili-infused hash browns, and a choice of ham steak, country-style sausage links, or their famous Millionaire’s Bacon. Naturally, I had to try the Millionaire’s Bacon, and it did not disappoint! The perfect balance of spicy and sweet made it simply irresistible. Barry chose Sarah’s Scramble, a tasty mix of scrambled eggs, ham, spinach, and smoked cheddar cheese. Both meals were rounded out with fresh fruit and berries, making for a satisfying and hearty start to our day. We were so full, we didn’t even think about lunch until dinner rolled around.
Scenic Coastal Walk
With the sun shining and a bank of fog off the ocean, we headed out for a scenic walk. Just outside the inn’s entrance, you’ll find a trail sign marking the path through the trees that leads to the entrance roadway. Follow the road down to Hwy 1, cross over to an old frontage road running parallel to the coast, and enjoy breathtaking views of Smuggler’s Cove. We strolled along the road until we reached the Mendocino Bay Viewpoint sign and trail that led us to a stunning bluff overlooking the Mendocino Coast. There’s a bench right at the cliff’s edge that’s perfect for a moment of peaceful reflection and meditation. We could have easily spent hours there, listening to the crash of the surf and soaking in panoramic views of Mendocino Village perched high on the cliffs.
Spa Treatment at The Pavilion at BGI
I couldn’t resist indulging in a 60-minute Swedish Massage at The Pavilion, Brewery Gulch Inn’s serene spa sanctuary. The moment I stepped inside The Pavilion’s cozy building next to the inn, I felt an immediate sense of calm. The space, designed with two massage tables, is ideal for solo relaxation or a couples’ massage.
Rebekah, the inn’s Spa Coordinator, gave me one of the most restful and meditative massages I’ve ever had. She incorporated Hot Stones and soothing Aromatherapy into the treatment, which took the experience to another level of bliss.
The spa offers a variety of treatments, including:
- Massages
- Private Yoga sessions
- Shinshin (Japanese forest bathing)
- Sound Healing
Whether you’re a guest at the inn or just visiting the area, these spa treatments are a must-try. Highly recommended!
Wine Hour & Dining at Brewery Gulch Inn
Complimentary wine and beer is offered early evening, from 5:30-6:30 pm, making every moment feel indulgent. During the evening wine hour, we had the pleasure of meeting fellow guests, including a few from our neck of the woods in the SF Bay Area. Dinner that night was yet another culinary highlight – Thai-Style Crab Cakes, flavored with water chestnuts, green onions, cilantro, basil, and pickled ginger-lime aioli. They were paired with coconut-steamed jasmine rice and flash-fried organic green beans and roasted bell peppers in a light sesame glaze. Since I’m not a fan of cilantro, the chef prepared a special Jumbo Shrimp dish just for me, and it was absolutely incredible. To top off the meal, we indulged in a refreshing Mango-Lime Mousse & Sugar Cookie Parfait with Fresh Berries & Whipped Cream. YUM!
Watch the video below to see pictures of the food and wine.
Day 3
Breakfast at Brewery Gulch Inn
For breakfast, I had the Fancy Avocado Toast. A delicious combination of smashed avocado on a toasted bagel, topped with sliced tomato, arugula, and pepper-jack cheese, it was served alongside two eggs and the inn’s signature chili-infused hash browns. I deconstructed my dish, savoring the eggs, hash browns, and fruit on a separate plate. Barry went with Chef Steve’s Favorite Croissant & Gravy – a buttery, flaky croissant split in half and topped with two eggs, along with a rich mushroom, sage, and chicken-apple sausage gravy. The dish also came with the famous chili-infused hash browns. And both meals were accompanied by coffee, freshly-squeezed juices, fresh fruit and berries. Yet another incredible start to the day.
Our stay at Brewery Gulch Inn was nothing short of spectacular. The staff was warm, attentive, and made us feel right at home. We can’t wait for our next visit!
Drive to Downtown Mendocino
After breakfast, we checked out of the inn, made the short drive to Mendocino, parked on Main Street, and set off to explore Mendocino Headlands State Park.
Mendocino Headlands State Park – Discover the Mendocino Coast
Mendocino Headlands State Park is just a stone’s throw from downtown Mendocino. This 347-acre park is surrounded on three sides by rugged cliffs and the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. It offers miles of scenic trails with sweeping views of the dramatic coastline. We strolled down Mendocino’s Main Street and crossed the road onto a sandy walking trail along the bluffs to begin our adventure. The trails lead to breathtaking, panoramic ocean vistas, rugged cliffs, and fascinating rock formations. Hidden coves, arches, and tide pools are waiting to be explored along the way. We hiked most of the 4.8-mile Mendocino Headlands loop trail, which takes about an hour and a half to complete depending on your pace and stops along the way. We lucked out and it was a beautiful fog-free day, albeit a little windy, but perfect for soaking in the spectacular views and enjoying a few peaceful, meditative moments by the sea. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and layers, as temperatures can vary. Note: There are no guardrails along the trails, so don’t get too close to the edges. The park is free to enter and offers plenty of parking, making it an ideal spot for anyone looking to experience the stunning Mendocino coast.
MacCallum House
Nestled in the heart of Mendocino Village lies the charming MacCallum House – a boutique hotel offering a range of accommodations, from six elegant rooms in the Victorian Main House to seven quaint cottages, a six-room Historic Barn, and a second-floor ocean-view room just a block away. Additionally, there are nine spacious suites a short walk from the main property, giving guests plenty of options for their stay.
Our room #18 was located in the Historic Barn. While the stairs leading up to our room and deck were a little steep, they provided us with a bit of daily exercise, and the cozy retreat that awaited us made the climb more than worth it. One of the highlights of our room was a large stone wood-burning fireplace, adding a touch of rustic charm. Our spacious private deck also offered spectacular ocean views, a perfect place to unwind, meditate and enjoy stargazing. Room amenities included a king-sized bed, tiled shower, flat-screen TV with a DVD player, complimentary Wi-Fi, a Keurig coffee maker stocked with coffee and tea, a mini-fridge, and plush comfy robes for relaxing. We loved being within walking distance of everything, from local shops and restaurants, to museums and stunning coastal trails.

MacCallum House Restaurant and Grey Whale Bar & Cafe
The MacCallum House Restaurant offers a warm and inviting dining experience, with two cozy dining rooms featuring crackling fireplaces and a charming bar area. The adjacent Grey Whale Bar & Café wraps around with a sunlit porch, perfect for soaking in the Mendocino ambiance. Chef Alan Cantor’s culinary creations showcase the best of the region, with fresh, locally sourced seafood, organic meats, and produce from nearby farms and ranches. The wine selection is equally impressive, with a focus on Mendocino County vintages, as well as offerings from Napa and Sonoma.
See pictures below of our cocktails and dinner at MacCallum House Restaurant & Bar.
Our evening began with pre-dinner cocktails at the Grey Whale Bar. We then moved to a romantic corner table by the window, with a distant view of the ocean, accompanied by the timeless sounds of oldies classics in the background. For appetizers, I opted for the Trio of Artisan Cheeses, which was the perfect prelude to my main course of Pan-Seared Scallops, served with creamed corn, mushrooms, and green beans – simply exquisite. Barry started with a fresh Caprese Salad with Heirloom Tomatoes, followed up with a house specialty – Fried Chicken, accompanied by jalapeño cornbread and a refreshing watermelon salad. We couldn’t resist ordering a side of Smoked Paprika Fries, which paired beautifully with both dishes. For dessert, we shared a bowl of housemade Fromage Blanc Ice Cream, a sweet and creamy ending to an unforgettable meal.
Every bite was a testament to Chef Cantor’s skill, making it a decadent and delicious dining experience from start to finish
Day 4
Breakfast at MacCallum House Grey Whale Cafe
We enjoyed a delightful breakfast in the Grey Whale Café’s bright sunlit porch, surrounded by natural light. There’s also limited seating on the outdoor deck, ideal for those who prefer to dine al fresco. I opted for the Mac Benedict– a delicious twist on the classic, featuring two perfectly poached eggs atop Niman Ranch ham, served on sourdough toast and topped with chive hollandaise, fresh arugula and crispy griddled Yukon Gold potatoes. Barry went for the Huevos Rancheros, a vibrant and flavorful dish with eggs, corn tortillas, pinto beans, house-made pork sausage, sautéed peppers, queso fresco, adobo sauce, sour cream, guacamole, and a smoky habanero salsa. Both meals were hearty and full of flavor – just right to start the day.
Explore Mendocino Village
On our last full day in Mendocino, we set out to explore Mendocino’s charming village. We wandered through art galleries, browsed the unique boutiques and shops, and admired the town’s historic architecture. One of the must-visit spots is Goodlife Café & Bakery, a local favorite known for its delicious coffee and fresh pastries. Visit the Mendocino Art Center. And if you’re a history buff, be sure to stop by the Ford House Museum on Main Street. The quaint museum doubles as the Visitor Center for Mendocino Headlands State Park and offers insights into the area’s rich heritage. Just across from MacCallum House, you’ll find the Kelley House Museum, which not only offers a fascinating glimpse into the village’s past but also provides guided Historic District Walking Tours.
As we continued along Main Street, we discovered some of our favorite shops: Whistle Stop for unique gifts, Mendocino Jams & Preserves for artisanal treats, and Papa Bear’s Chocolate Haus for decadent handmade chocolates and fudge. For those curious about California’s cannabis culture, Sol de Mendocino is a local dispensary where visitors can browse a variety of products (if you’re visiting from out-of-state, pot is legal in CA; just be sure to bring a valid photo ID).
Lunch at The Brickery
We fancied a light casual lunch, so we headed to The Brickery, the wood-fired pizza spot nestled in the garden of Café Beaujolais. Dining al fresco, we shared a perfectly crisp, thin-crust pizza (half Margherita and half sausage and black olives), striking a delicious balance of flavors. The outdoor garden setting added to the charm, offering a serene family and pet-friendly atmosphere – a great way to unwind and recharge for the rest of the day.
Dinner at Luna Trattoria
For our final evening in Mendocino, we dined at Luna Trattoria, a popular spot for locals and visitors seeking authentic Italian comfort food. This cozy restaurant offers a welcoming atmosphere with a small bar and several dining areas, including an enchanting outdoor garden tucked away among the trees. It’s especially magical at night with the twinkling lights. The ambiance was set perfectly with a classic playlist featuring Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, and other timeless hits. We started our meal with a tasty Caesar salad before diving into our entrées. I chose the Cioppino, a hearty seafood dish with clams, mussels, shrimp, and rock cod in a rich homemade tomato sauce served over linguine. Barry opted for the Shrimp Skewers paired with linguine. Note that Luna Trattoria is open for dinner only, making it an ideal spot for a cozy evening meal.
Day 5
Farewell to Mendocino
After a leisurely breakfast, we checked out and began our drive home, reflecting on what had been one of the most relaxing getaways we’ve had in years. Mendocino’s serene charm, stunning natural beauty, luxurious accommodations, and exceptional food, combined with its proximity to renowned wineries, make it an ideal destination for a romantic escape or peaceful retreat.
