“The Rock” – National Historic Landmark
Alcatraz was once an infamous Federal Penitentiary. The island was also referred to as “The Rock.” It was home to Al “Scarface” Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and Robert “The Birdman” Stroud. Alcatraz houses three levels of tiny cells. It was where 300 of the nation’s worst criminals were imprisoned during 1934 to 1963. Today, this national historic landmark is one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions. It draws over a million visitors a year. Ride the ferry across San Francisco Bay and have fun exploring the island.

Alcatraz Hours
Alcatraz is open every day. Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Check Summer and Winter schedules prior to booking your ticket. Plan to arrive 45 minutes prior to your ferry departure and queue at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing.
Allow plenty of time (up to 3 hours) to explore Alcatraz Island, view the exhibits, and enjoy the tours. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking. And wear layers (it can get chilly on the ferry ride and on the island, especially if the fog rolls in).
