Big Sur is one of the most beautiful destinations in Northern California, drawing millions of visitors a year. Its rugged scenic coastline starts about 30 miles south of Monterey and stretches 90 miles to the San Luis Obispo County line. Big Sur is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from San Francisco International Airport via Highway 1.

Big Sur, where the sun shines over 300 days a year, is famous for its stunning coastline and year-round outdoor recreational activities. This popular California destination offers visitors countless attractions. Enjoy scenic hiking during a Spring, Summer or Fall trip. Some must-see sights along Big Sur’s Coast include McWay Falls (pictured above), a stunning 80-ft-tall waterfall dropping onto a pristine beach. The falls are just a short walk from Hwy 1 and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. For hiking, Ewoldsen Trail is considered one of the best day hikes in Big Sur. Visit Pfeiffer Beach, famous for its purple sand. Walk or drive across Bixby Creek Bridge (pictured below). The iconic architectural landmark is one of California’s most photographed bridges .

The Best Time To Visit Big Sur

With over 300 days of sunshine, Big Sur is pretty much a year-round destination. Peak season runs from April to October. During busy Summer months, the coast can be foggy in the mornings so be sure to wear layers.
