Cancun
Cancun is a popular Mexican resort city located on the Yucatán Peninsula. It’s famous for its beautiful pristine white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. The area is filled with oceanfront hotels, shops, restaurants and fun nightlife. During one of our visits here, we took several day trips to Cozumel, Tulum and Chichén-Itzá.
Cozumel
The island of Cozumel is located a few hours from Cancun. It makes a fun day trip if you have the time. Renowned for its white sandy beaches and magnificent coral reefs, Cozumel offers some of the best snorkeling and scuba-diving in the Caribbean. Visit Chankanaab and see their famous underwater statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary, a highlight of our visit. Enjoy snorkeling at Palancar Garden Reef, one of the island’s most beautiful spots.
Tulum
Tulum is one of the Yucatán Peninsula’s most popular and picturesque tourist attractions. This hot destination is located about 90 minutes south of Cancun. Once the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city, Tulum is famous for its archaeological sites of ancient Mayan ruins, perched atop a rocky cliff overlooking a beautiful white sandy beach (pictured above). Tulum also has great snorkeling, yoga and fun nightlife.
Chichén-Itzá
Be sure to visit the Mayan ruins of Chichén-Itzá (pictured below), located on the Yucatán Peninsula. It’s located about 120 miles from Cancun. Known as El Castillo, this world-famous pyramid was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It stands about 75 feet tall. Each of its four sides has 91 steps from its base to its top. During a visit years ago, we climbed the outer steps of this steep pyramid all the way to the top. We also climbed steps inside the pyramid to see a magnificent jade-studded jaguar in one of its chambers. Unfortunately today, climbing the steps inside or out is no longer allowed. This amazing Mayan archaeological site is one of Mexico’s most popular destinations, visited by over two million tourists every year.

The Best Time To Visit Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula
Mexico’s weather varies significantly by season and by region. The Yucatán Peninsula is a popular year-round destination. June-August can be hot, humid and rainy. December thru’ May is warm, sunny and dry. Hurricane season typically runs from the beginning of June-October – and can extend thru’ November. Peak travel periods are the week before Easter and Christmas/New Year.
Note: Mexico City can be cooler and more temperate than other regions.
