The Sistine Chapel is one of the most visited attractions in Italy. Located in Rome’s Vatican Palace, it’s one of Vatican City’s most popular tourist destinations. The Sistine Chapel is famous for its stunning 16th century Renaissance frescoes by Michelangelo. It is regarded as one of his most famous works. The frescoes were commissioned by Pope Julius in 1508 and painted by Michelangelo between 1508-1512. Contrary to popular belief, Michelangelo painted the frescoed ceiling in a standing position, and not lying down. His most famous panel was “The Creation of Adam” (as pictured above). Take a guided tour of the Sistine Chapel and learn more about its art, architecture and history.
