In April 2009, three NEW exhibits opened at Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39 in San Francisco:
- Jellies (Moon Jellies and Brown Sea Nettles)
- Giant Pacific Octopus
- Land Animals “Touch the Bay”
Jellies / Jelly Fish
If you like Jelly Fish, it’s worth a trip to the aquarium just to see these amazing Moon Jellies and Brown Sea Nettles. They’re amazing… and the largest jellies we’ve ever seen! Did you know that there are more than 200 species of jellies – and they’re made up of 95% water and have no heart, brains, bones or other organs?
Moon Jellies
Beautiful translucent Moon Jellies are displayed in a floor-to-ceiling tank. They’re hypnotic – we could have watched them for hours. Moon Jellies are found in temperate and tropical waters around the world — including along the Northern California Coast. All Moon Jellies on display were born and raised at the Aquarium.
Brown Sea Nettles
Wait ’til you see the Brown Sea Nettles. They’re much larger than those we’ve seen before — and they look like something from another planet! Brown Sea Nettles are most commonly found along the west coast of North America – specifically along California and Oregon coasts and into the Gulf of Alaska and Mexico. Stinging cells are located within their tentacles. They have no control over what they sting – so beware… they’ll sting instantly when touched.
Giant Pacific Octopus
Highly intelligent, Giant Pacific Octopus grow bigger and live longer than any other octopus species. Usually a reddish-brown color, they have an ability to change colors in an instant and blend into their environment. Octopus are generally nocturnal, so don’t expect a lot of movement during the day. The Octopus exhibit, features a clear bubble window at the base of the tank where kids can stick their heads up and be a part of the exhibit. We were so tempted… maybe next time 🙂
Note: Octopus may or may not be on exhibit during your visit.
Touch Pools & Bay Lab Land Animals
Always a favorite with aquarium visitors, the “Touch the Bay” exhibit space has two Touch Pools where visitors can touch marine animals. Reach out to the Bat Rays and Starfish. FUN for the whole family! The Bay Lab Land Animals area features a variety of local and exotic land-dwelling animals, including Californian Kingsnakes, Skinks and Turtles. Enjoy animal interactions, hands-on science experiments and special presentations.
Plan a FUN Family Day Out at Pier 39 and visit the Aquarium of the Bay. Your kids will love it!
Our favorites are the Jelly Fish. What about you?
