“You can go to heaven if you want. I’d rather stay in Bermuda.”
– Mark Twain
Bermuda is pretty close to paradise. From the moment you cruise into the islands, the sights are breathtaking. Bermuda makes a perfect romantic getaway. The idyllic 21-square mile British archipelago is located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has gorgeous beaches with soft pink-white sand and clear, aqua waters. Bermuda is home to beautiful coral reefs, lush landscaping, historical attractions, fine dining, and legendary championship golf courses. It’s also one of the world’s finest scuba-diving destinations. We took a Celebrity cruise to Bermuda and upon arrival, hired a private guide to show us around the island. We highly recommend it.
Fun Bermuda Attractions
St. George’s
Many of Bermuda’s historical attractions are located in the quaint town of St. George’s. Founded in 1612, it’s the oldest and most historic settlement on the island. Visit the Old State House, constructed in 1620. It’s the oldest house in Bermuda. Explore Fort St. Catherine, one of the island’s oldest forts. Built in 1614, it overlooks the beach where Bermuda’s first settlers came ashore. Learn about the island’s colorful history and see replicas of the British Crown Jewels guarded by a wax-figured Beefeater. The fort also houses an interesting Guns and Weapons Collection. Fort St. Catherine is located at the East end of the island, near St. George’s.
Other attractions include: Bermuda National Gallery featuring historic European art. Explore Somers Garden, a stone column and garden commemorating Sir George Somers, founder of Bermuda. Visit St. Peter’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church in the Western Hemisphere. Take a fun selfie at the Stocks, Pillory, Whipping Post and Ducking Stool. Replicas of these were used to punish criminals over 400 years ago.
Bermuda Beaches
Horseshoe Bay Beach
Named for its horseshoe-shaped bay, Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of Bermuda’s most famous and popular beaches. It’s white-pink sand is cool to the touch, even in the hottest temperatures. If the tide is out, stroll down to the far end of the beach and walk around the corner to discover beautiful rock formations, secluded coves and breathtaking views.
Warwick Long Bay
Warwick Long Bay covers a half-mile stretch of sand, the longest on the island. It’s a beach-lover’s delight, especially if you crave solitude.
Jobson’s Cove
Jobson’s Cove is a gorgeous tucked-away horseshoe-shaped bay, located adjacent to Warwick Long Bay. It’s only 30 feet wide and its shallow waters make it an excellent location for swimming and snorkeling.
Elbow Beach
Elbow Beach is another island favorite. If you’re staying at Elbow Beach Resort, you have access to beach chairs, towels, showers and rest rooms. However, these amenities are not available to the public… but the beach is. Lifeguards are on duty during the Summer months. The resort also rents paddle boats, kayaks and snorkel gear.
Tobacco Bay Beach
Tobacco Bay Beach is a popular public beach on the other side of the island, close to the historic town of St. George’s. Like Horseshoe Bay Beach, it can get very crowded, especially if the cruise ships are in port. Its facilities include showers, restrooms, changing rooms and a snack bar. Beach rentals are also available.
