One of the best parts of travel is dining in new places, but as visitors we often miss out on some of the best available options. If you’re visiting South Lake Tahoe, check out these local favorites and taste the best we have to offer, but be sure to explore. As with any other growing city, our restaurant scene is constantly changing, and there are more than a few gems to be found that couldn’t make my list.
Great Dining in South Lake Tahoe
1. Off the Hook
This great Japanese restaurant is usually teaming with locals and visitors alike, and no one is disappointed. With two pages of rolls to choose from as well as sashimi, noodles, and other traditional dishes, the menu has something for just about everyone and the prices are completely fair. For dessert try the tempura bananas, deep fried and covered with sundae toppings.
2. Bacchi’s Inn
Like so many of the best eateries, this hole-in-the-wall is often overlooked by non-residents, and since they hardly advertise and have no website it’s easy to understand why. Still, Bacchi’s has been a South Lake Tahoe staple for over 80 years, and this delicious, hearty, family-style fare will call you back again and again.
3. Izzy’s Burger Spa
Any trip to Tahoe would be incomplete without one of Izzy’s giant burgers. It may not be gourmet cuisine, but if you’re looking for an all-American, charbroiled hamburger and a cold soda/beer after a long day at the beach, nothing beats Izzy’s. Another easy-to-miss treasure, you’ll find this diamond in the rough on the main drag in town, Lake Tahoe Blvd.
4. Himmel Haus
Located right next to Heavenly Ski Resort, this great destination for German cuisine also offers free trivia night every Wednesday and a Stein Club for meticulous tasters. They’ve also recently started their own small but exciting Beir Fest complete with several different drinking games and a downhill trike race that should not be missed.
It’s a very new tradition, but they’re hoping for a second showing this summer, and based on the turnout last time I’d say they’re well on their way.
5. Gordon’s Backyard BBQ
The world has learned to appreciate the food truck again, but even that may not prepare you for the wonders of Gordon’s Backyard BBQ. At this moment it may seem odd to you to think that a food truck would cater an event at the governor’s mansion, but you’ll understand once you’ve tasted their ribs, BBQ chicken, and famous meaty beans.
